BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF HAWAII (BIA-HI)

After attending numerous brain injury conferences on the mainland, Ian Mattoch dreamed of having a conference in Hawai`i where internationally-known brain injury specialists and Hawai‘i physicians shared information with our medical and legal community on the cutting-edge research and rehabilitation that was taking place in the treatment of persons who had sustained a traumatic brain injury.  The successful Brain Injury Symposium co-sponsored by Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific and the Law Offices of Ian Mattoch was held at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.  Other such medico-legal conferences have followed with the Law Offices of Ian Mattoch sponsoring brain injury specialists from as far as Australia and the mainland United States to Honolulu, Hawai‘i.

As an active board member and current president of the BIA-HI, Ian Mattoch has supported the Board in various administrative and legal issues.  There have been numerous projects developed and implemented under Ian’s participation on the Board such as the successful nurse educator/advocacy program, the Hilo Survivor Support Group, the Caregiver Handbook, and the HeadSmart Conference for teachers.  Modeled after the Marin Brain Injury Network’s Larkspur Center in California, and with the help of numerous individuals, Ian assisted in the design and planning of Hawai‘i’s first Brain Injury Resource Center.

Through his BIA-HI board work and his advocacy for his clients through his legal practice, Ian hopes to create community-wide awareness of the devastating effects of traumatic brain injury.  It is Ian’s goal that awareness will, in turn, spawn action and resources that will begin to make a difference in the lives of people with a traumatic brain injury in the State of Hawai‘i.
